Locals call for ‘tougher punishment’ after Scunthorpe rooftop standoff
Locals have called for “tougher punishment” against those who climb rooftops following recent teenage arrest.
Earlier in the week, a 19-year-old from Scunthorpe was arrested after taking to a nearby roof on Bristol Road– this caused frustrating disruptions when Humberside Police enforced a cordon when attempting to remove the teenager from the rooftop, and to ensure the safety of those passing by.
Eventually the man was arrested on suspicion of robbery, criminal damage, and assault and remains in police custody at this time.
During a statement, Humberside Police confirmed the situation had been dealt with and the teenager was in custody. However, locals were quick to issue words of anger, suggesting tougher punishment was needed.
“This is where tougher punishments are required. Seems to be becoming more of a regular occurrence these roof top protests and causing significant cost to the working taxpayer”, stated one resident.
“Slap on the hands and don’t do it again, then free to go to start all over again”, stressed another.
“Good! That guy must have cost the good old taxpayers £1,000s. I hope he doesn’t simply get a slap on wrist”, argued one frustrated local.
“He needs charging for the emergency services time…. waste of taxpayers’ money”, added another.
Rooftop ‘protests’ have become a regular occurrence for police forces across the country to deal with, which indicates the subsequent consequences for those engaging in such activities are not strong enough.
