By Ex-fisherman to be celebrated at Heritage Centre reunion evening
Ex-fishermen from across North East Lincolnshire will be recognised at an event later this month.
There is a reunion evening to be held at Grimsby’s Fishing Heritage Centre this month.
The organisers, the centre, and The Fishermen’s Mission hope that up to 150 former trawlermen will attend the event on Thursday 16 June, between 6 pm and 10 pm.
The event is to celebrate their vital role in Great Grimsby’s fishing industry.
Guests are to receive exclusive use of the centre for the evening and will enjoy music and access to free food and refreshments.
Councillor Tom Furneaux, the portfolio holder for culture, heritage, and the visitor economy, said: “I’m very pleased this evening is returning once again to honour those who risked their lives at sea to bring home one of Britain’s most popular dishes. Their part in the history and prosperity of this town is immense.”
David Ornsby, operations manager at the centre, added: “We’re delighted that the reunions have been such a success and that the strong relationship we have forged with the Fishermen’s Mission has enabled such a special event for our local fishermen to take place.
“The Trawlerman’s Night highlights that the centre is here for them and has people that think of them and respect their efforts.
“We’re also very pleased to have the support of Docks Beers, who have given discounted refreshments for the event.”
Will Douglas of Docks Beers said “It’s only right that the contribution made by the former fishermen of Grimsby is recognised. It is wonderful that these reunions can take place again and a pleasure for us to support it.”
Superintendent Susan Brown of the Fishermen’s Mission added: “We are so delighted to have our first reunion since the COVID-19 pandemic. Social isolation has been a major problem during Covid and since, and so many of our fishermen are really looking forward to gathering and seeing fellow former seafarers again.
“We’re enormously grateful to the support that we have received and to the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre for again accommodating us at this fantastic venue.”
Alfred Enderby’s will be supplying fishcakes for the event, for guests to enjoy a Fishcake Buster, a term used in the fishing days for a bun.
