Police officers nominated for award after incredible bravery confronting gunman

Four officers from Humberside Police have been recognised for their bravery during the arrest of a gunman during a pursuit.

They have been nominated for a prestigious award in recognition of their bravery.

PC Gary Kendrew, PC Harry Taylor, PC Zach Meadows, and Dog Handler PC Chris Grady have been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards following the incident in Scunthorpe town centre last year.

On July 27th, a man was identified as acting suspiciously by PC Meadows who alerted his team, then notifying them he would confront the man.

The man attempted to flee the scene and PC Meadows took chase, informing his colleagues of the situation.

A court heard the suspect pulled a firearm out of his bag and discharged the weapon in the direction of PC Meadows, missing the officer.

PC Meadows continued his pursuit courageously with dog handler PC Grady arriving at the scene to assist.

The man entered a neighbouring residential garden, before entering a house, with PCs Taylor, Kendrew, and Grady surrounding the property to block his escape.

The officers decided to enter the property after they identified children’s toys inside, to save a possible hostage situation they put themselves at risk to control the situation.

Humberside Police Federation Chair Lee Sims said:

“The man had already shown he was not afraid to fire a gun at a police officer, so for them to proactively continue the pursuit without knowing whether he would do so again is to their enormous credit.

“They showed incredible bravery and were determined that this individual would not harm their colleagues or innocent members of the public. They made sure this dangerous individual was off our streets.

“We are very proud of Gary, Harry, Zach, and Chris, and let’s not forget PD Xander- and they are all very worthy nominees for a National Police Bravery Award.”
