Lia Nici shares her continued support for Boris Johnson despite damning Sue Gray report

Great Grimsby MP Lia Nici has come out this morning to share her continued support for Boris Johnson, stating that she believes he can still run the country despite findings in the daming Sue Gray report.

In the past, Ms Nici has shared her support for the PM but has also insisted that any judgement should wait until the Sue Gray report is published in full and the police have finished their investigations.

Asked on BBC Radio Humberside this morning if Boris Johnson is still fit to run the country she answered: “I think he is. He first read the report a 10 yesterday morning and he was absolutely devastated and appalled by what was in the report.

“As one of his private secretaries I went walking around number ten with him yesterday talking to staff and all the staff said those who were causing the problems have pretty much all left now.”

She added that Mr Johnson “isn’t someone who goes out and drinks, he is a world leader with very good standards in regards to professional behaviour in the workplace.”

Ms Nici went on to state that she believes the PM should not have been given a fixed penalty notice for the event he attended as he believed he was at work.

“As far as he was concerned, when he went to these work events they were work events. He went to tell staff thank you for working so hard,” she said.

Presenter Kofi read a comment from a viewer who believed Mr Johnson should step down before asking the MP her response.

In reply, she said: “Not everyone likes Boris Johnson, not everyone in the country voted for him so I respect their opinion but I believe that Boris Johnson is a very good Prime Minister, a very good leader of the country.”

“People are right we do have much bigger things to get on with… we need to remember we’ve got some very serious world issues and issues in the country that we need to get on with.”

A windfall tax and a package of £10bn was announced this morning to help with the cost of living, just one day after the Sue Gray report.

Labour has been calling for this measure for months, presenter Kofi states, are Tories using this as a distraction to save their own skin?

MP Lia Nici disagreed, stating: “No absolutely not. I know that is an easy line for the press to take but I work in the House of commons every week, I take meetings with the Chancellor where he has been discussing this and making a balance between not putting things in action too quickly too late.

“There is a balance to be had in all this, the Chancellor and the Treasury have been keeping a very close eye on this before the report.”
