Frustration as thieves target Keelby yarn bombers

A group in Keelby that regularly decorates their community with yarn bombers has reported yet another theft of the designs.

The group, Brightening Keelby creates colourful designs that can be seen throughout the village.

“Brightening Keelby is a community group of volunteers who litter pick, clean the village brighten the area with art craft, and flowers. We have been going for 12 years .”.

The group is heavily engaged with the community and decorates all around the area, they are currently decorating with special Jubilee yarn bombers, including their community garden.

Unfortunately, however, there have been instances of theft and vandalism against the work by the group.

“Cannot understand why people can’t just leave them alone, you may not like them BUT you don’t have the right to remove them.” one of the comments by the group said.

On social media the group wrote:

“Please can people stop taking the yarn art made by some ladies in the village (2 of the knitters are in their 80s ) the first picture is other villages and towns so ours are small.
“Since Friday most of the country’s news has featured yarn art there was a whole feature on the BBC and Countryfile. Crochet and knitting help people with their mental health through gardening painting, art, and street art.
“Please be kind Thank you.”

They are responsible for the commemorative ‘Tommy’ figures that can be seen around the village.

It is referred to as the ‘Tommy’ project, however, one of the figures was vandalized last month.

“We have ongoing projects, the community garden which we are currently fundraising for a target of £2500”

The group has recently been featured on BBC Radio Humberside where they talked further about their yarn bombing of the area.

“We are trying hard to Brighten the village and these setbacks slow our progress and cost money we are raising for other areas of the village”

The group hopes to continue to raise money to support their current and ongoing projects.
