Two miles of contaminated water found after swans ingested fuel
Nearly two miles of contaminated water has been found after two swans were found covered in fuel on a busy Grimsby road.
One of the swans, now named Diesel, also sadly ingested some of the fuel meaning he needed urgent veterinary care.
Volunteers had gone looking for the second swan as they could not rescue it when it was last seen, searching for hours for the poor bird.
Although they couldn’t find the swan, the team did locate roughly two miles of contaminated water near Stallingborough.
The issue has been reported to North East Lincolnshire Council and thankfully the Environmental Health team was on the scene within half an hour.
An investigation will now be launched in the hopes of finding out how the spill happened and how to prevent it from happening again.
Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue said: “We’ve spent another 4 hours in Stallingborough attempting to locate the swan and any contaminated water source…
“We have located one swan that could potentially be the one we’re looking for, however, he didn’t want anything to do with us so further rescue efforts will be made!
“One of the outcomes from our search is that we found roughly 1 1/2 – 2 miles of contaminated water that we were able to report to the relevant services, within half an hour of our report NELC and Environmental Health was on scene to investigate, hopefully, this will help save a lot of wildlife!
“We will keep doing our best and our volunteers are working as hard as they can to assist in any way possible!”
