Charlie the Cheeky Chappy Magpie saved from crow attack
In another busy day of work, Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue have saved another bird in need of help.
Charlie the cheeky magpie was rescued by volunteers from the Grimsby Blue Cross animal hospital after a member of the public had spotted him being attacked by crows.
The inquisitive little bird wasn’t in great shape when he arrived but thankfully, the rescue team are patching him up back to full health.
Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue said: “Charlie is a fledgling that was collected by our volunteers from the Grimsby Blue Cross animal hospital yesterday after a member of the public had spotted him being attacked by crows.
“Like crows, magpies are part of the corvid family, a group of very intelligent, inquisitive and great problem solving birds.
“During the summer you can expect to see magpies eating invertebrates, such as beetles, flies, caterpillars, spiders, worms and leatherjackets. – They’re also brilliant scavengers eating food from bird tables or chicken runs, pet foods etc. They will eat carrion at all times of year and catch small mammals and birds.
“When food is abundant, magpies hoard the surplus to eat later. They make a small hole in the ground with their beak, place the food in it and cover it with grass, a stone or a leaf. These caches are spread around their territory or home range.
“Charlie is in good condition considering his bad start and we do not expect him to stay with us very long at all!”
