Turnout figure for local elections 25%

The Conservatives have maintained their majority on North East Lincolnshire Council despite losing two seats.

The Conservatives still hold an 18-seat majority.

Labour also gained the Heneage ward in the only changes to the line-up of the council.

However this years turnout was just over 25% on the 16 seats up for election on the the 42-seat council.

The turnout figure for the elections is was released last night , last years turnout sat at 24.9% across North East Lincolnshire.

In Freshney a recount was needed to decide the winner with Mr Holland being announced as victor with a 49-vote majority,

Labour’s Kevin Shutt beat Conservative candidate Mark Sandford by 745 votes to 502 in Heneage Ward.

Speaking before the count Grimsby MP Lia Nici said: “Election night is always exciting and it’s a culmination of people being out and talking to members of the public and seeing what message they send us.

Nationally we’ve got lots of challenges post-pandemic, cost of living but also local people want to see continuous change and see their council approve. These votes will allow us to see what message voters are sending us.”

All 15 wards were up for election last night as the polls opened at 7 am until 10 pm.

The first ballot boxes arrived at 10:10 pm as the verification process took place.

All the wards began their official count by midnight, with two recounts called for Freshney and Yarborough.

Roughly 100 members of council staff and tellers were involved in the counting process, which continued into the early hours of the morning.
