Barrier erected at leisure centre after travellers set up camp
Fencing and a 2 metre height barrier has been erected at Scunthorpe’s leisure centre after travellers used the area for a camp site for around 2 weeks.
Reports had suggested more than 30 caravans arrived at The Pods car park in Scunthorpe from Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3.
Following their arrival, waste was disposed across most of the site due to the large area that the vehicles took up.
It is understood that people wanting to use facilities at the leisure centre were unable to park their cars.
As a result of the disturbance, North Lincolnshire Council issued a notice to leave to the travellers on Wednesday, April 6.
After failing to conform, the council took the travellers to court which eventually saw the visitors leave on Tuesday, April 13.
Witnesses evidenced multiple council workers clearing away litter and waste that had been left.
To prevent further incidents in the future, a brand new two metre high barrier and fencing was installed over the Easter weekend.
Residents have described the installation as a “success” as they hope travellers will not make a return.
Conversely, some Sunthorpe locals have argued that one small fence and barrier will not be a long-term solution.
Speaking to the press, one local stated the new installation was a brilliant way to prevent caravans from entering The Pods, but they would find somewhere else in Scunthorpe to stay.
“The amount of litter they left when they were here was disgusting”, they added.
Another resident agreed with the positive notion, although expressed long-term concerns for the whole of Scunthorpe.
“So having the barriers will mean that they cannot get their caravans through anymore which is good news because it will stop them coming here again”, they said.
“However, it will not stop them from setting up camp elsewhere in Scunthorpe unless we have these barriers everywhere we go?”
