Grimsby MP fails to respond to latest PM scandal
The MP for Grimsby has failed to respond to questions regarding their stance on the PM’s fixed penalty notice.
MP Lia Nici was asked for comment on the PM’s recent controversy surrounding ‘partygate’.
In January, The Conservative MP for Great Grimsby stated her full support for the Prime Minister amid growing calls to resign, calling the leaking of images ‘a stitch up’ by anti-Brexit workers.
“I can understand why people are upset and angry but I’m also upset and angry because quite frankly, I think that this is a stitch-up,” Lia Nici told BBC Radio Humberside.
She reiterated her support for Boris Johnson, saying “I can’t see that the Prime Minister did anything wrong but I think it was right that he apologised.”
GI Grimsby News asked the MP: “It has now been revealed that the Prime Minister and Rishi Sunak will both have to pay fines over parties held at Downing Street. How do you respond to this information?”.
The MP has not since sent a response.
Back in January, Ms. Nici said “of course, he was there, his office and his flat are there”, but also encouraged people to wait for the report before questioning the PM’s position.
However, she did not want to wait for the report to state that his private secretary should be “disciplined” explaining: “whether they are senior or junior, we were in a lockdown – it was quite clear what we should and shouldn’t be doing.”
According to reports, the prime minister will face MPs this week after another week of controversy surrounding No10.
This comes after being issued with a fixed penalty as a result of a police investigation into lockdown breaches in Downing Street and Whitehall in 2020 and 2021
Reports suggest Boris Johnson is preparing to set out his “version of events” on partygate as he faces MPs this week.
Mr. Johnson is expected to update the House of Commons on the situation as parliament resumes following the Easter break –
Before this, new claims about the PM’s involvement in alleged lockdown breaking emerged. He has already been fined for attending a gathering to celebrate his birthday in June 2020.
Over the matter the past week, Mr. Johnson has said he will “set the record straight”.
From Sky News, Energy minister Greg Hands said “The prime minister will have his say in parliament and will outline his version of events and face questions from MPs.”
However, all tory cabinet ministers have backed Mr. Johnson and Mr. Sunak – including Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who said they were “delivering for Britain on many fronts”.
The PM said he felt “an even greater sense of obligation to deliver”, while the chancellor said he was “focused on delivering for the British people”.
