Toll Bar chaos continues as works extended
Traffic disruption at Toll Bar roundabout in New Waltham, Grimsby, is set to continue as works are extended.
Engineers are currently carrying out gas installation works at a nearby housing development.
The works began earlier this month and are set to continue until at least Thursday.
In a letter sent to local councillors, North East Lincolnshire Council attributed the delays to a “mechanical fault”.
Highways Chief Martin Lear said: “Unfortunately the contractor has damaged an underground drilling device due to unexpected hard ground conditions and will not be able to complete the works early.
“They have requested an extension until Thursday.
“We have explored overtime, night working and additional resources with the contractor in an attempt to shorten the duration of these works.
“However, at this stage there are no practical and safe ways of saving time.
“As a result of this there will be a minor change to the Traffic Management, but this should not impact on traffic flow.
“The signage will be amended to show the new end date of April 14.”
The update follows years of controversy and improvement works to the roundabout, which have seen motorists subjected to ongoing disruption.
Anglian Water have also confirmed that they will be carrying out work in the area next month.
Speaking via social media, locals have branded the situation “chaos” and an “absolute nightmare”.
Local businesses have also complained that the situation has been a “major blow” to trade as ongoing construction work puts people off visiting their stores.
Speaking to Gi Grimsby News, one business owner said:
“The council has done it again! 4-way traffic lights at Toll Bar so a private company can build houses that no one can afford!
“Not much traffic coming through as a result so trade suffers for all local businesses – support local businesses and trades at this difficult time, we are here for you as long as you use us.
“Times are difficult enough at the moment without additional problems putting people off travelling to us!”
Updates to follow.
