Will Lia Nici’s new position help or hinder Grimsby’s development?

On Tueday it was announced that Grimsby MP Lia Nici had been appointed as the Prime Minister’s Private Secretary in his mini cabinet reshuffle following the resignation of five senior staff.

Nici has continually offered Boris Johnson her ‘wholehearted support’ through the ongoing lockdown party scandal, referring to him as the ‘best’ Prime Minister in generations.

Now many are wondering if her new position will help or hinder the town’s future development.

On Monday 31 January, Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove visted Grimsby after unveiling the long awaited Levelling Up white paper which aims to boost development in the North of the country.

Grimsby is one of the Northern towns set to benefit from the scheme, which aims decrease the gap between the highest and lowest of society.

Should the scheme and funding work, Grimsby could see a huge boost, creating a brighter future.

However, questions have been raised on whether Ms Nici’s new role will draw attention away from Grimsby’s development as more and more of her time will be spent in London with the Prime Minister.

Many locals shared this view on her apponitment, stating that “now she will have even less time for Grimsby.”

Another wrote: “Further distancing the electorate of Grimsby. You definitely couldn’t write this!”

The MP has also previously been branded as ‘invisible’ by her constituents for her lack of activity around the town.

Do you think her new position will help Grimsby? Let us know in the comments!
