Man sentenced following fatal dangerous driving incident
A 41-year-old man has been sentenced following a dangerous driving incident which resulted in the death of another man.
Alan Singleton, from Stainforth in Doncaster, was sentenced on Monday 7 February at Hull Crown Court.
Singleton received seven and half years behind bars for his crimes, which involved losing control of his vehicle and killing his passenger, 22-year-old Paul Needham.
The dangerous driving death occurred on Tuesday 21 July 2020 at a roundabout near Ealand in Crowle, North Lincolnshire.
According to the police, Singleton was racing another vehicle at 100mph on the A18 when he approached the roundabout at around 11:30pm.
He reportedly drove in the opposite direction to oncoming traffic, leaving other motorists on the roundabout blind to his actions.
He then lost control of the vehicle, struck the kerb and hit a lamppost before falling into a ditch.
Following the dangerous driving incident, his passenger was reported dead at the scene.
Sally Acomb, a member of Humberside Police’s Serious Collision Unit, reported: “Singleton’s actions have had a devastating impact on Paul’s family.
“He and his partner had two children, one of whom was born just a few months before Paul’s death.
“Nothing will bring Paul back for his loved ones, but I hope the sentence goes some way to bringing closure after this traumatic ordeal.
“I hope that this lengthy sentence will be a deterrent to others.
“I would like to thank all those who assisted the police with our enquiries.”
According to the force, upon sentencing, Judge John Thackray QC told Singleton: “I don’t accept that you are remorseful as you seriously considered removing your guilty plea.
“Your first instinct was to lie that you were run off the road.
“You were racing and you chose to go the wrong way.”
