Arrests made and drugs and weapons seized in police “day of action” in Grimsby town centre
Arrests were made and weapons and drugs seized as police clamped down on the anti-social behaviour and crime in Grimsby town centre in a “day of action” yesterday (Monday 11 October).
This comes after many local people have spoken out about the ongoing problems around the bus station and within the newly-renovated St James’ Square – with one resident telling Gi Media that the anti-social behaviour in the area is a “living nightmare”.
Last month, we reported on an assault that two women were subjected to as they carried out work within the Riverhead area.
Allegedly, a man who frequents the area as part of a larger group approached the two women and verbally attacked them, got “in their face” and attempted to follow them back to their place of work.
This is just one example of the ongoing issues within the area.
A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “Officers in Grimsby have been taking part in a day of action across the town centre today as part of our continued commitment to making Grimsby town centre a safe and pleasant place to visit and work.
“We have been working with our partners, local businesses and communities and taken direct action to address their concerns.”
Chief Inspector Paul French added: “We recognise the impact caused by those engaging in street-based anti-social behaviour and criminality, and such behaviour will not be tolerated.
“We recognise the pride residents of North East Lincolnshire have in our town centre, and we very much share that. The recent re-development of St James Square is a great example of this.
“This pre-planned targeted activity is part of a number of planned days of action in the weeks and months ahead. However, I want to offer my reassurance that my colleagues are out there every day, offering advice and support to those that need it and challenging those that continue to behave inappropriately.
“We have already completed a number of searches today, and have made a number of arrests, seized weapons and also drugs.
“Our message to those involved in crime and anti-social behaviour in our communities is clear – this will not be tolerated and we will do all we can to hold those to account for the harm they cause.
“Over recent weeks our activity in Grimsby town centre has seen us complete a number of stop searches, as well as making arrests for possession of drugs, and arrests for assault against a North East Lincolnshire Council worker.
“In addition to these, a number of persons have been issued formal directions to leave the town centre locality due to their behaviour.
“I want to take this opportunity to encourage the local community to keep working with us. Your information helps us build up the bigger picture and take action where needed, making sure that Grimsby stays a great place to live, work and visit.”
