Plans for Scunthorpe’s new A&E department
Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust has confirmed plans to build a new A&E department at Scunthorpe General Hospital.
The new build is planned for around 2,178 square metres.
This will include mechanical and electrical plant space, built on an area of land which is currently a car park and an office block on the Cliff Gardens side of the hospital.
Once the new facility is constructed and open, the Trust says it has plans to use the current A&E department space to house a new service called Acute Assessment Units.
This new service will mean patients can be seen more quickly and by specialists in a range of conditions and illnesses and will not need admitting onto a ward for treatment.
The building will also house an increased waiting area to cope with demand and social distancing requirements and a dedicated play area that is of sufficient size for younger patients.
Space has also been allocated for a dedicated ambulance bay which will reduce the time required for ambulances staff to get patients into the hospital.
New car parking facilities are also being proposed.
Director of estates and facilities and Senior Responsible Officer (SRO) Jug Johal said:
“This represents a significant investment for the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLaG).
“The new department will ensure that we are able to offer the highest levels of patient care and service both now and in the future.
“Patients will be able to begin their care and treatment more quickly, in an environment which meets the needs of both them and our clinical teams.”
As part of this multi-million pound project, new A&E department will also be built at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby.
