Match report: 10-man Town suffer heavy defeat at Swindon

Grimsby Town were on the end of a bruising defeat away at Swindon Town in League Two this afternoon.

Goals from Charlie Austin, Marcel Lavinier, Jonny Williams, Ronan Darcy and Saidou Khan secured a 5-0 victory for the hosts, with Mariners defender Danny Amos seeing red in the first half.

Paul Hurst made one change to his lineup, with new signing Mikey O’Neill coming in for Brendan Kiernan.

Town started the game well and went close to opening the scoring after two minutes when some neat play resulted in Gavan Holohan’s effort from 25 yards being well tipped over the bar by Sol Brynn.

Swindon’s Khan went close a couple of minutes later, as his low strike from the edge of the box bounced back off the post.

In bizarre fashion, the game came to a halt when referee Sam Purkiss had to receive treatment after the ball hit him in the face, which resulted in him being carried off on a stretcher.

The hosts took the lead on 25 minutes when Remeao Hutton’s cross to the far post found Austin, who guided his header past Max Crocombe.

The Mariners were dealt a further setback when Amos received a red card for a foul on Jacob Wakeling, with the visitors’ defender being the last man.

Shortly after that, Crocombe pulled off an excellent save after a cross from Hutton bounced off Smith and towards goal, with the keeper managing to tip it around the post.

In a rare Town attack, John McAtee connected with a ball down the left by substitute Anthony Glennon, but the forward’s effort just went past the far post.

The visitors managed to fend off some late pressure from the Robins to ensure they went in at half-time just a goal behind.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Austin went close to grabbing his second of the game, but his strike hit the bar before Rushian Hepburn-Murphy prodded the ball past Crocombe and it bounced back off the post.

They weren’t to be denied for much longer, though, as substitute Lavinier – who had only been on the field for less than a minute – handed his side some breathing space when his volley hit the post and went into the net.

Swindon quickly grabbed a third on 66 minutes through Jonny Williams after the midfielder got on the end of the rebound following Crocombe’s save from Hepburn-Murphy’s strike.

With the game and the scoreline getting away from Town, the Robins added a fourth goal on 78 minutes through Ronan Darcy, whose shot bounced in off the post after he also came off the bench.

The punishment wasn’t over there for the Mariners, though, as Saidou Khan dribbled past Smith and Michee Efete, before drilling his effort into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Swindon almost added a sixth goal deep into injury time, but Lavinier was denied his second of the afternoon when Crocombe kept out his deflected effort.

The referee brought the game to an end shortly after that on an afternoon to forget for 10-man Town.
