Match report: Grimsby Town Youth’s register cup victory over Hartlepool

Grimsby Town Youth’s secured a narrow victory away at Hartlepool United in their final Youth Alliance Cup group game.

A late goal from Henry Moore was enough to hand the Mariners a 1-0 win after the long trip up north on Tuesday.

Both sides had little chance of progressing to the knockout stages with other teams having games in hand, but the Mariners came into the fixture looking for a strong performance after a disappointing display at Burton last time out.

A gutsy display is what Town produced as they competed well throughout, showing glimpses of good football in a game they dominated for large parts despite tricky conditions.

In the opening 45 minutes, forward Harry Milner went down in the box with shouts for a penalty waved away by the referee.

Efforts from Louis Boyd, George Sims, Will Hodgson and Tom Zerboni were all well kept out by Hartlepool’s goalkeeper, whose performance ensured the contest remained goalless going into the break.

Another dominant half was served up from Town after half-time, but more stern defending kept them at bay.

But with five minutes left to play, the Mariners snatched the three points when a pinpoint cross from full-back Sims found Moore unmarked to head home and clinch the victory.

The Youth team’s next fixture will be against Rotherham United on Saturday, 21 January.
