Tories accused of ‘stealing Christmas’ across Grimsby

Today, protesters gathered outside Great Grimsby MP Lia Nici’s office as tens of thousands of people across the area are living in poverty.

Gathering outside her office on Freeman Street, protesters hoped to to highlight the MP’s failures amid growing poverty and debt in Grimsby.

Research carried out by leading polling company Survation for Unite has revealed the extent of poverty and debt in Grimsby, with 32,949 people in the area living in poverty.

Unite the Union claims that Ms Nici has failed to support her constituents by voting against their interests in Parliament.

She recently voted against raising the threshold for paying income tax and opposed keeping the £20 Universal Credit uplift – which affects working and non-working households.

Ms Nici also voted against the proper funding of public services and action to tackle corporate tax avoidance.

Unite Senior Organiser Joe Rollin said: “Amid shocking levels of hardship and debt across Grimsby, Lia Nici consistently fails her constituents by voting against their interests in Parliament. The level of food poverty in Grimsby is disgraceful. Politicians like Lia Nici should be ashamed of allowing hunger on this scale to grip the community but her voting record shows how she is making things worse.

“Well, the community are taking matters into their own hands. Unite intends to build power in our workplaces and simultaneously organise in our communities. Unite has established permanent bases on the ground in Grimsby to work with workers within their communities to deliver an economy that works for them.”

Lia Nici has been contacted for a comment.
