Normality finally returns to Eleanor Street

The closure of one lane on Ellis Way was introduced as a safety precaution following the incident.

The left lane on Ellis Way will now allow traffic to go straight onto Eleanor Street, as well as turning left down to Freeman Street. The right-hand footpath on Eleanor Street remains open, while the left-hand footpath is partially closed, as a precautionary safety measure, directly in front of the art college.

People using the footpath are asked to transition over to the opposite side of the road using the uncontrolled crossing points at the junction of Hainton Square and Eleanor Street and Eleanor Street and Heneage Road.

The building’s owner sent their contractor to the site on Monday 28 November to carry out works, which means the building is now a secure structure. Work included installing the remainder of the second-floor ties to the existing steel frame on the front elevation.

This work has been completed and was inspected by the council’s building control team yesterday, Tuesday 29 November. It is now deemed safe to re-open the road fully, with traffic management removed and both lanes re-open.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank residents and motorists for their patience as we have worked with the owner to make the building secure and get the road fully re-open. I understand the frustration this may have caused and appreciate the negative impact on those having to live near a derelict structure which has been subject to fires and vandalism.”
