Rare and nostalgic photographs on display

Locals have the chance to view rare and historic photographs in a new exhibition showcasing North East Lincolnshire through the decades.

‘Street Life’ will feature some of the towns best-loved landmarks such as Grimsby’s Dock Tower, the Corporation Bridge and Cleethorpes Pier.

Also on display will be nostalgic views of the workplace, including Hewitt’s brewery, Peter Dixon’s papermill and Doig’s shipyard, as well images of theatres, cinemas, shops, and public houses.

Visitors will have the chance to revisit their childhood, with pictures of many of the region’s schools, including Carr Lane, Barcroft Street, Strand Street and Holme Hill.

Adrian Wilkinson, archivist at Lincs Inspire, said: “As this is the grand finale of the three-year project, the exhibition will be larger than our previous events and will be staged in the splendid setting of the Town Hall’s Assembly Room. Our main aim has been to capture people’s memories of the area, so we’re looking forward to meeting anyone who has a story connected with North East Lincolnshire.”

Street Life is the final exhibition of the Heritage Lottery-funded ‘Streets and their Stories’ project which saw many other successful exhibitions such as Vikings, Normans and Zeplins and From Tailors to Trawlers.

The Streets and their Stories project is a local history project led by Lincs Inspire Libraries, Arts Development and North East Lincolnshire Archives.

The project calls on local people to share their memories of the area, bring along their photographs and learn more about North East Lincolnshire’s past.

Local people have the opportunity to browse a whole range of local history materials including maps, photographs and documents.

Street Life will take place at Grimsby Town Hall on Wednesday, November 23 and Thursday, November 24, 10am to 4pm on both days.
