Critically ill patients ‘exhausted’ over hospital blunder

Patients attending Castle Hill Hospital have have been left ‘exhausted’ and ‘frustrated’ due to a flawed hospital system.

Patients needing treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy can cross the Humber Bridge for no cost using tickets Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust provides.

However, some patients have shared their experiences of this system, stating that it very rarely works.

Some stated that they are left waiting in long queues for the tickets at the hospital despite being severely ill while other have stated that when they go to collect their tickets the office is shut.

Due to this, many patients have had to pay for the bridge crossing and have yet to see any reimbursement.

One such patient said: ”We go to the hospital several times a week for radiotherapy which leaves my partner feeling incredibly weak and tired, and yet every single week we have to stand up outside a booth that is rarely open and wait to be given vouchers to cross the bridge.

“Each department within the hospital has its own reception, which is open and always manned, so I don’t see why they can’t give the vouchers out rather than forcing people who are incredibly unwell to trapse around the hospital.

“When I asked why the system works this way I was just told ‘because it does’. No explanation, no logic, no understanding.

“Patient wellbeing has not been considered at all.”

When asked about flaws in the ticketing system, Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said they were reviewing the process of Humber Bridge crossings based on the feedback from patients.

A spokeswoman for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We are currently looking at how we can improve the process of issuing tickets for the Humber Bridge, based on feedback we’ve received from patients.

“We have had problems with sickness absence affecting our General Office at the Queen’s Centre, Castle Hill, recently and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
