Firefighters attacked whilst battling high volume of bonfire night calls

Fire crews from Humberside Fire and Rescue were busy this bonfire night with many call out across the area including Grimsby and Barton Upon Humber.

A total of 11 call outs were made including Dam Road and Waterside Road, Barton upon Humber, and in Barnes Crescent and Jack Brownsword Way, Scunthorpe.

In Grimsby, crews responded to fires in Barmouth Drive, Peaks Lane, Albion Street, Harold Street, York Street, Durban Road and Cambridge Road but none were major incidents.

The calls came as firefighters faced around 40 incidents on the North Bank, and as the Chief Fire Officer complained of a crew being attacked while dealing with an incident on November 4.

Writing on Twitter, Phil Shillito said: “Really disappointing to hear that colleagues from HumbersideFire were attacked last night attending an incident. Completely unacceptable and the matter has been passed to Humberbeat to investigate.”

Today, the fire chief added: “A big thank you to all colleagues @HumbersideFire and partners including @Humberbeat for their efforts over the bonfire period. Large increase in incident calls and volume made it a busy weekend. Thanks to all our communities for organising and attending public displays.”
