Controversial Grant Street plans remain dormant
The Cleethorpes car park which is set to undergo a £3.5 million upgrade and earns less than £25,000 a year in revenue has somewhat hit a roadblock.
Last year, North East Lincolnshire Council announced that Grant Street car park would undergo a brand-new refurbishment by building a single-story extension.
The extension would create 268 new parking spaces on top of the 65 existing spots as well as 15-20 new blue badge spaces. However, at the time, a Freedom of Information request revealed the revenue figures between 2017 and 2021.
In the 2020/21 financial year, the car park made £20,953.68 in revenue.
The average revenue over the past five years totals up to £23,268,19.
The council has hoped that the upgrades to the car park would increase, with the yearly earnings expected to rise to £169,000.
A large portion of this income would come from the 80-90 percent increase in car parking demand in the area between May and September.
Resident Andy Gray, started a petition against the proposed extension, with over 400 signing the petition and more each day. The residence of Mr. Gray has since been listed for sale; it is unknown whether it is in relation.
North East Lincolnshire Council is expected to borrow approximately £3.5m of funds to build the extension, which will then be paid back using the revenue generated by the income. However, a spokesman said options and costs are still ‘being reviewed’.
A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said in their update: “There is currently no update to provide at present and options and costs are still being reviewed. An update will be provided when there is further information to supply.”
