By Paul Hurst unaware of reports linking Anthony Glennon to Championship clubs
Paul Hurst said he was unaware of the recent reports linking Grimsby Town defender Anthony Glennon to Championship clubs.
Football Insider reported that second tier sides Sunderland, Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday are all tracking the Town left-back, who joined the club on a free transfer from Burnley in the summer.
The media outlet claimed those clubs have been making “regular checks” on Glennon after a string of impressive performances this season for the Mariners, including against Crawley Town when he scored a sensational free-kick.
Those rumours, however, came as quite a surprise to Town boss Paul Hurst, who told Gi Media he hadn’t heard anything about the reports.
“If he is, then fair play to him – that’s certainly news to me,” said Hurst.
“We certainly haven’t had anything come to us as a football club to even consider, but maybe the club might get a nice offer at some point if it was true,” he added.
The Town manager admitted, though, that it’s a “big jump” from League Two football up to the Championship.
“He’s had a bit of first-team experience but not loads,” added Hurst. “But I’d like to think teams will always watch us.
“Someone somewhere will always be watching your games and you try and get that message across to the players. Someone is always watching, and I don’t just mean the fans, I mean in terms of clubs.
“Games are so easily accessible now and a lot of clubs have numerous members of staff at games scouting. If you do well, there’s every chance someone will make an enquiry.”
The Bootle-born defender, who spent 12 years in the Liverpool academy, has four assists to his name so far this season after deciding to re-join the club on a permanent basis after previously spending time on loan at Blundell Park during the 2019-20 campaign.
Glennon recently said the fans played a huge part in his decision to return to the club and that he was enjoying life with the Mariners.
The 22-year-old has been sidelined through illness for the past couple of games and his energy down the left flank – combined with his ability from set-pieces – have certainly been missed, with Town falling to defeat in both of those matches.
But Hurst confirmed he has shrugged off that sickness and will be available for the FA Cup tie against high-flying Plymouth Argyle on Saturday at Blundell Park.
