Loving tributes paid to Grimsby Town Football Club’s ‘unsung hero’
Grimsby Town fans have been paying their respects and sharing loving memories of Daphne Farquharson, who worked tirelessly to help town fans in need.
Forty years ago Daphne and her husband founded the Grimsby Town Disabled Supporters Travel Club, organising everything from dedicated and specialised travel to away games to Christmas parties for its members.
Daphne was incredibly dedicated to the position, volunteering countless hours to ensure the members enjoyed their experiences whilst supporting their beloved Mariners.
In 2020, Daphne reluctantly took a step back from the management of the Travel Club but could regularly be seen at Grimsby Town matches in the Family Lounge enjoying her favourite tipple of brandy and lemonade!
One local said: “Daphne’s contribution to the GTFC family cannot possibly be overstated. Town were one of if not THE first club to operate a Disabled Supporters Club. She must have helped thousands of fans to be able to see their football heroes over the years. A tenacious, big-hearted lady whose commitment was total.”
Another said: “I had the pleasure of travelling up and down the country with Daphne and many others , whilst a youngster, with my dad helping out. Absolutely lovely lady and will be sorely missed by many. Thinking of all the family at this sad time.”
Grimsby Town Football Club said: “Grimsby Town Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of Daphne Farquharson.
“The thoughts of everybody associated with Grimsby Town Football Club are with Daphne’s friends and family at this sad time. As a mark of respect, we will be observing a minute’s applause prior to kick-off ahead of our next home fixture vs. Crewe Alexandra on Saturday 10th September.”
