Introduction of ‘School Street’ no-car zones at four schools across the borough

Four schools are set to prohibit parking or driving outside four local schools during morning and afternoon pick-up times, as part of a new council effort to improve safety and congestion.

North East Lincolnshire Council has put forward and approved the traffic order which will ban motorists from using the roads at four schools in the borough, in the terms times, the School Streets initiative will stop vehicles on weekdays between 8.30 am- 9 am and 2.45 pm – 3.45 pm, situated at Ormiston South Parade Academy and Macaulay Primary Academy in Grimsby.

Restrictions outside Reynolds Academy, Cleethorpes, and Pilgrim Academy, Immingham will also be introduced, to be placed between 8.30 am and 9 am and 3 pm until 4 pm, Monday to Friday during term time.

At a meeting held by Cllr Stewart Swinburn, the NELC portfolio holder for environment and transport, the pilot scheme was approved to create a “calmer, safer, healthier and more pleasant environment for young people to walk, cycle or scoot to and from school.

A council spokesperson said: “Roads outside schools are often very congested at school drop-off and pick-up times, resulting in concerns about road safety, localised air pollution and in some cases inconsiderate or dangerous parking affecting residents accessing their properties. The introduction of a School Street will significantly improve road safety and parking concerns and provide a safer environment within the vicinity of the school gate for children, pedestrians, and residents.”

South Parade, outside Ormiston South Parade Academy, and Macaulay Street, outside Macaulay Primary Academy, will become a cycle and pedestrian-only zones during the times of operation. Machray Place, Cleethorpes, outside Reynolds Academy; and Allerton Drive, Immingham, outside Pilgrim Academy, are also included.

The restrictions are expected to come into force after the October half-term break and will continue “for a maximum 18-month period”, they could then be made permanent if successful. the council said. It will be reviewed after six months to consider any alterations.

Councillors also approved the installation of cameras to enforce the ‘School Keep Clear’ restriction at the entrance to Old Clee School, Cleethorpes. A permanent ban on vehicles on Victoria Street West, East St Mary’s Gate, and Old Market Place, Grimsby.
