Town claim a point at Blundell Park

Grimsby Town hosted Sutton United this afternoon with Paul Hurst’s Might Mariners looking to grab their first win at home in League Two this season.

Following a frustrating mid-week cancellation, Town would have wanted a convincing 90 minutes under their belts prior to their massive Carabao Cup clash next Tuesday!

GTFC’s opposition had already recorded two defeats so far this season which would have provided attacking minded motivation for the Mariners to get the job done at home, adding three points on the board.

Town conceded an early free kick in a dangerous position following a soft foul, but the visitors were unable to capitalise on the gifted set piece.

Holohan came close to netting the opener on the 10-minute mark. The Irishman was found on the edge of the box after a promising spell for the Mariners, but the midfielder could only send his effort wide of the mark.

Max Crocombe came to his side’s rescue after a dangerous defensive error presented Sutton with a half chance to steal an opener. Thankfully, the Town shot stopper pulled off an incredible save to eradicate danger and avoid seeing his net bulge

Glennon had the ball in the back of the Sutton net, but the referee chalked the goal off for an apparent foul in the box – a big let off for the visitors.

Holohan continued to cause problems at the top end of the pitch after being found in space again. Unfortunately, the midfielder was unable to keep his shot from raising over the bar.

The first half concluded all square, however the Mariners looked dangerous on the break and looked likely to draw first blood.

Gavan Holohan got the Mariners underway for the second 45.

The Grimsby gaffer made an early double substitute just before the 60th minute which saw Clifton and Pepple replace Morris and Kiernan.

Summer signing Kiernan Green aided his backline to deny Sutton an opening goal. Green towered over his man to head away the danger and keep the Mariners level.

Super-sub Pepple almost opened his account at Blundell Park following a brilliant burst of pace after being found in acres of space. Through on goal, Bim pulled the trigger and forced the Sutton keeper to make a crucial save, wining a corner for his troubles.

Despite Grimsby’s impressive forward play, the Mariners were unable to break the deadlock and the game finished 0-0.
