Jealous man who wielded an axe in an apparent rage jailed
The neighbours of Chestnut Avenue were alerted when a ‘jealous’ man wielded an axe, whilst topless, against another man in an apparent rage.
The man attempted to chase the other man and tried to strike him with the axe, which was said to be around one and a half feet long.
During the hearing at Grimsby Crown Court, Tomas Brundza, 43, of Chestnut Avenue in Immingham, admitted threatening with an axe on the evening of April 26, last year.
Prosecuting, Craig Lowe said he was ‘drunk and aggressive’ whilst confronting the man, when he first assaulted him, punching him in the face, after the altercation stopped, he returned five minutes later with the axe.
Mr. Lowe said the victim was not afraid at the sight of the man with the axe as he had served in the military.
Neighbours in Hollingsworth Avenue reportedly saw Brundza swing the axe at the other man multiple times, a neighbour intervened and pushed the man with the axe into one of the properties. Police attended and he was arrested, but the axe was not recovered, the court heard.
A Lithuanian interpreter helped cite case details for the defendant. For Brundza, Richard Lunn said the incident with the axe lasted only around 30 seconds, and involved a minimal amount of people, he added the altercation was 16 months ago and there had been no further incidents.
“This was an incident wholly out of character. It was jealousy issues and he had consumed a significant amount of alcohol,” said Mr. Lunn.
He said he was now reconciled with his partner and supports her and their daughter. He added his client was now abstaining from consuming alcohol.
Judge Michael Fanning sentenced him to one year and four months in prison, adding that the man risked serious harm, and he hoped it sent out a message to all those considering using a knife or blade.
