Locals praise fire crews for attending multiple blazes during heat wave

Locals have praised their fire crews after Tuesday’s scorching heat wave saw multiple fires break out across the area.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident in the evening after a huge spike in call-outs.

The extremely dry conditions resulted in grass and scrubland fires breaking out across Northern Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire.

There has also been a spike in other fires including a large blaze in Hessle on Tuesday evening which spread to six gardens and two homes.

The service received 120 calls on Monday alone, with Tuesday likely being even busier due to the ever-rising heat.

Posting on social media, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said: “We have declared a major incident as our control room and crews are responding to a high volume of 999 calls and fires across the Humber region during Tuesday’s record-breaking heatwave. Please only call 999 if you have a genuine emergency or if there’s an immediate risk to life.”

Temperatures reached record highs on Tuesday, as Coningsby in Lincolnshire reached 40.3C while Hull saw the high 30s.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service chief Chris Blacksell tweeted to say how busy the control room staff have been.

He tweeted: “Can’t tell you how incredibly hard @HumbersideFire Control room are working right now. Amazingly busy getting fire engines and officers mobilised to the vast quantity of calls we’re getting. They’re a credit to the Service but please help them by stopping fires from starting.

“To put how busy they are into context I took them all some @MagnumIceCream and not one of them had time to even take a bite! They’ve gone in the freezer for later when they finish.”

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue also attended fires outside of Louth yesterday evening, with multiple fires and police vehicles in attendance.

One local wanted to share their admiration for the fire crews, stating: “Big shout out to these legends, who’d only just got back from attending the fires outside of Louth in the fields when a fire broke out at a property on Eastfield Road, it all happened so quickly and thankfully no one was hurt. I think 5 engines, police, ambulance & other support all attended and are still on-site at the moment. In this heat after the day, they’ve all had, thank you.”

Praising the Humberside crews another person wrote: “Thinking of everyone working on or affected by this. We’re in the best hands!”
