‘Harrison’s Ices’ receive backlash despite offering workers free water

A local Ice-Cream Van company has received praise from residents recently as they have dedicated free Ice Cold Water to emergency workers.

The Met Office recently release an amber heat warning across most of the UK – including Grimsby – as temperatures could reach a sweltering 32C on Sunday.

Now, Harrison’s Ices in Cleethorpes will be giving a free ‘Ice Cold Water’ to any 999 emergency worker including firefighters, police officers, and paramedics.

However, some have taken issue with apparent ‘discrimination’ over who receives the free water and have said it shouldn’t just be limited to certain workers.

“There are loads of emergency or front line workers they include refuse collectors and emergency utility workers, they all have to wear a certain type of uniform for their jobs and can also swelter in this weather due to working outside, what about them too? this is discrimination” one woman wrote.

“What about utility workers? you would have no water, gas, electric or phone.” another added.

It seems that even though a small business has attempted to provide relief, and to perform a good deed, there are still those taking issues with the determination of who is included, “I would love to do this for more workers, but I’m no millionaire yet.” Harrison’s Ice’s said on their social media page.

Another user commented suggesting it was ‘all for publicity. However, there were plenty of locals quick on the mark to praise Harrison’s Ices.

The extreme weather warning, which could potentially cause a risk to life, has now been extended until Monday.

Dr. Agostinho Sousa, the head of extreme events and health protection at the UK Health Security Agency, said: “Heat-health alerts have now been issued to the majority of the country, with temperatures set to remain consistently high throughout the duration of this week.”

The promotion at Harrison’s Ices is available to all those on duty and in full uniform and can be claimed from any of the company’s vans.

“Any delivery person in full Uniform (Dpd / Royal Mail and so on) this also includes the police / Paramedics and Firefighters ) and also any carer on the go/ community midwives and nurses can grab one Of these from any of our vans.

“They won’t just be any water – we will place them in our freezers on Sunday evening so you are able

“To grab a bottle of water frozen admittedly not to drink there and then – and it will defrost throughout your shift – GENIUS I know! Ice cold.

“Our vans are easily spotted – from Immingham all the way through to Louth!”
