‘Unfinished’ motorbike barriers cause concern for disabled access
A motorbike barrier installed in Immingham has confused residents and locals, over whether the project is ongoing or yet to be finished.
An update, provided by NELC, outlines the intention behind the barrier installed on Hawthorn Avenue, Immingham, and assures the confirmation of correct specifications.
The barrier is part of the Cycle Superhighway project, a new 3.8km off-road cycleway between Grimsby and Immingham. An officer from EQUANS has visited the site, and confirmed the installation and specifications to be correct, they said.
At the moment, temporary fencing was erected and NELC says the project is not yet finished.
A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said: “These works are part of a borough-wide Cycle Superhighway project, which will see a new 3.8km off-road cycleway constructed between Grimsby and Immingham.
“The project will provide a cycleway for cyclists to travel along Kings Road, turning into Hawthorn Avenue and onto Waterworks Street, which will lead into the Immingham town centre. The barrier works for the new pedestrian/cycleway between Hawthorn Ave and Waterworks Street are not yet complete.
“Temporary Heras fencing has been installed until the permanent fencing is installed on either side of the footpath. The purpose of the barriers is to reduce the risk pedestrians and cyclists are exposed to when the route is used as an informal cut-through by motorcyclists.
“The barriers which have been installed have been tested and proven to prevent motorbikes whilst allowing access to pedestrians and users of most sizes of mobility vehicles.
An officer from our regeneration partner EQUANS has visited the site and has confirmed the barriers have been installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and specifications.”
