Tragedy as man dies after eating duck eggs at North Lincolnshire show

A man who tragically died after eating duck eggs at a North Lincolnshire show endured “one of the worst cases of salmonella”, an inquest was told.

Sadly, Niptoon Tavakoli died in hospital on August 12, 2019, just two months after falling ill.

The 65-year-old travelled from Iran to the UK aged 19 and retired from his career in retail management and catering months before his tragic illness.

Yesterday (Monday 27 June), Cheryl Tavakoli told a jury at Doncaster Coroner’s Court that her husband consumed two eggs purchased from a stall at the show, the day after their family getaway trip to North Lincolnshire in June of 2019.

The Lincolnite reported that Mr Tavakoli ate a further two eggs later in the week and subsequently went on to develop diarrhoea and vomiting. A week later, his wife dialled 999 fearing her partner may have developed sepsis.

The BBC stated she was concerned as the ambulance crew did not travel to Doncaster Royal Infirmary under blue lights, adding that her husband’s lips and nails had turned black following delays in the emergency department.

Dr Maskill told the inquest that Mr Tavakoli had received antibiotics to treat the illness. The consultant confirmed the 65-year-old had died from multi-organ failure caused by salmonella, stating:

“I’ve been doing intensive care for 27 years. He’s only the second person I’ve come across with this degree of salmonella.”

The inquest trail is expected to last for five days.
