Ex-Grimsby trawlerman makes £20,000 from model boats
An ex-trawlerman from Grimsby has earned a staggering £20,000 after he sold a large collection of model boats.
Pete Dixon, 75, can live out his dream of purchasing a real boat after selling 400 model boats for £20,000 at auction.
According to auctioneer Carl Vince, Mr Dixon’s impressive collection garnered interest from ship lovers as far as Scotland and Ireland.
The 75-year-old said he was sad to see some of his models leave at auction but the interest in his fleet was “fantastic.”
According to the BBC, a wooden haul boat, named The Margaret, fetched the biggest price of the day after it sold for £800.
Carl Vince described the auction as “absolutely unbelievable”, adding:
“During the viewing on Saturday we had about 1,000 people come and look at the boats. Pete turned up in his captain’s hat and gave a guided tour of all his boats from over the years.
“It sold for in excess of £20,000.
“There are 40 or so going to Aberdeenshire in Scotland and there are also 17 going to southern Ireland, the rest are all staying in the UK.”
One buyer even asked the ex-trawlerman to sign his purchase.
Following the auction on Sunday (19 June), Mr Dixon said he still has “another 100 (models) kicking about the house.”
The 75-year-old can now afford to buy a real boat and fulfil his dream!
