Frustration as youths hurl abuse at residents and vandalise cemetery

Locals in Louth have been left frustrated over recent days as a gang of youths have started to congregate at the toilet block in Louth Cemetery.

The group have been involved in multiple instances of anti-social behaviour such as hurling abuse at residents, littering, and even graffiti.

Police have now issued a warning, asking groups not to gather at the burial site and to show the “utmost respect” as people look to have peace and quiet with their lost loved ones.

Louth Police said: “We have had numerous recent reports of youths congregating near the toilet block on the Cemetery, London Road, Louth. Some of these individuals have been involved in anti-social behaviour which has included shouting abuse at residents at local properties, noise nuisance, littering, and graffiti.

“The Louth NPT team are currently in consultation with the Louth Town Council and Local East Lindsey ASB office with regards to these incidents and there have been several names of individuals mentioned which are currently being followed up. The NPT have increased patrols in the area.

“Please can I ask that groups of youths do *NOT* congregate in the cemetery. This is an area people visit to have time in peace and quiet with their dearly departed relatives and friends and as such is an area that should be treated with the utmost respect. Thank you.”

Many locals have been left angry by the abuse as the cemetery is a place for quiet and mourning, not for hurling abuse and vandalism.

One frustrated resident wrote: “Until younger people are taught what respect is they will never show it. A sad reflection of the times we live in.”

However, some did show sympathy for the group, asking what else is there for young people to do: “I can honestly say that I have never had a bad encounter with the youth of today but just stop and think for a few minutes what the youth of today have been through for the past 2 years and where are they supposed to go? No youth clubs most activities cost too much but were shut anyway. Come on people, give them a break or even better a chance, a chance for the carefree childhood we had and god forbid they do the things we did like scrumping apples.”
