Man found dead weeks after tragic death in Grimsby flat

A Grimsby man was found by police almost two months after last being seen, an inquest has heard.

Robert Lee Rudd, 40, of Thorgam Court was due to attend his probation service appointments, but officers were concerned after Rudd failed to respond to letters.

Robert was tragically found dead in his flat on January 21st, 2020 with notes beside him after Humberside Police attended his address.

In one of the notes, he talked about how he “wanted to join with his mother in the sky.”

A post-mortem examination showed that he had died from choking after taking a cocktail of prescribed medication and illicit substances.

At the hearing, Assistant coroner for North East Lincolnshire, Jane Eatock said he had been lying flat for quite sometime, following attending a probation service appointment at the end of November 2019. She later said he had been on a methadone programme for his drug abuse.

An officer said in a statement there were items of drug paraphernalia at the address, in close proximity to him.

Investigators who spoke to neighbours said it was not unusual for him to be scarce, he couldn’t be seen from any of the windows.

Miss Eatock concluded it was not possible to determine the levels of drugs in his system, due to the decomposition, but said they had contributed to his death.

“There is no way of knowing how long he had been there. He had engaged with drug rehabilitation charities but he was not able to remove himself from that lifestyle. His mother’s death caused a spiral effect.”

She also concluded from assessing the notes left by Mr. Rudd the death was due to suicide, expressing her condolences to his relatives.
