Grimsby Town’s BIGGEST game of the season is hours away!
Grimsby Town will play their biggest game of the season this afternoon for the right to play League Two football next campaign!
After an incredible year of football, the Mariners obtained a route to promotion via a play-off eliminator against Notts County.
The Magpies proved difficult opposition after a Rúben Rodrigues penalty shattered Town’s dreams. The atmosphere inside Meadow Lane during the remaining 20 minutes of play was intense as Grimsby hunted a late equaliser to rescue their play-off journey.
Match officials allocated an additional six minutes to be played which provided a lifeline for the Mariners.
As the clock edged closer to full time, the Black and White Army continued to press, eradicating County’s game management tactics.
With one minute left to play, Gavan Holohan was first to react following pandemonium in the six-yard box. The midfielder had found the equaliser with what proved to be the final chance of regular time!
In dramatic fashion, Grimsby Town replicated their comeback victory against Notts County earlier in the season thanks to an Emmanuel Dieseruvwe goal. The winning goal was scored as penalties loomed, a game of nerves that Town narrowly avoided.
Following their 2-1 victory at Meadow Lane, the Mariners travelled to Wales where they played Wrexham in the semi-final, a game now labelled as a “National League play-off classic”
Much like Town’s previous fixture, the match couldn’t be settled in 90 minutes, instead Grimsby had to endure another agonising 30 minutes of football.
Whilst the forward play was entertaining, edge of the seat football, the defence was questionable to say the least.
Town and Wrexham conceded numerous goals via set pieces, two goals were separated by just 120 seconds!
McAtee was particularly integral for the Mariners, causing problem after problem for the Dragons.
Dieseruvwe and Waterfall also chipped in during the final third action, the latter scoring twice, one of which was the winning goal.
Grimsby Town fully deserve to be in the mix for promotion this season, following two incredible results.
Solihull Moors will prove difficult opponents this afternoon, but the Mariners are a side inform with an army of supporters besides them.
Paul Hurst stated his roster of talent are “ready for action” adding the fixture should be a “very good game”
