Scunthorpe residents voice concerns over moped crime following ‘serious collision’
Scunthorpe residents have voiced their concerns regarding moped crime after a “serious collision” left two teenagers hospitalised.
Yesterday, Humberside Police released an appeal for witnesses to a collision on Ferry Road, Scunthorpe on 29 May.
The collision involved a red moped carrying two teenagers and a blue Audi car, both teenagers were taken to hospital for treatment for “serious injuries”, the force said.
Whilst expressing their best wishes to the injured, residents began asking questions pertaining to safety and moped crime in the town.
Several locals replied to the statement stating they were “not surprised” by the reported incident, further suggesting the Town has a history of “anti-social” moped drivers.
One resident, with first-hand witness experience, argued Scunthorpe has an “issue with anti-social mopeds and motorbikes that I’m not surprised there was finally a collision”
Adding:
“There needs to be a huge crackdown targeting these bikes because at some point someone is going to be killed or seriously hurt”
“If it was stolen or on false plates, I have got no sympathy, I am surprised an accident did not happen sooner”, added another.
“Two up on a moped???? Did they have a full license to ride two up???? Was the bike legal and on the road and the one riding it legal to do this and owned it”, questioned another.
Meanwhile, residents shifted the blame to local authorities, arguing moped crime needed to be prioritised by Humberside Police.
“This is what happens when Humberside Police refuse to tackle bike crime it was only a matter of time before this happened”
Although it is unclear if the bike was stolen, residents agree that tougher regulations, to ensure the safety of bike riders, vehicle drivers, and pedestrians, are needed.
