Levelling-up continues in our area as £6m multi-purpose facility is announced

Levelling-up continues in Scunthorpe as a new £6m multiple-purpose facility that will support those with complex needs has been announced.

Around £6m is set to be invested in a brand-new multi-purpose facility to support families and young people with complex disabilities.

The facility will offer “bespoke” short-break care for their Scunthorpe residents.

It is hoped that the environmentally friendly facilities will enable more young people to benefit from short breaks, bringing vital support to local families.

The children will receive excellent care from staff, who are trained to deal with complex needs including learning and physical difficulties, as well as general health needs.

The North Lincolnshire council said young people will be able to access an array of activities which will help develop important life skills.

The centre, set to be built on Alvingham Road, will be developed by the council and supported with funding from the Government’s Department for Education (DfE).

The new facility joins the £11m Trent View College announcement made last week.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“With Government support, we are investing millions of pounds of local tax payers money people supporting our most vulnerable children”

“We know how vital it is to local families that their children have access to this brilliant support here in North Lincolnshire rather than going out of the area. It ensures they can stay safe and connected in their own community”, he added.

“Taken together, the new short-break respite care offer and Trent View College will bring huge benefits to hundreds of local young people, supporting them to grow, develop and achieve”

Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children and families, said:

“As a parent of a child who previously used the service, I remember how amazing the existing Cygnets short break project is and the real difference the staff and centre made to our lives. Families of children with complex disabilities really value this service and the new building will allow it to become even better and offer more services”

“We are in conversation with Health colleagues pursuing our wish for palliative care to be included, I can’t imagine a more difficult and distressing time for any family and having to go out of county for support can only add to that. This is another great example of levelling-up in North Lincolnshire and demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that our most vulnerable children and their families are supported”, she added.
