Scunthorpe murderer scraps plans to change guilty plea to not guilty

A Scunthorpe murdered has scrapped his plan to change his guilty plea to not guilty, it has been reported.

Ex-soldier Andrew Grimes, 38, of Temple Road, Scunthorpe, who brutally murdered popular mother and nurse worker, Sophie Cartilidge, has scrapped his plan to change his guilty plea.

Grimes was due to be sentenced in December after he admitted murdering the 39-year-old.

Sophie was found at her home in Baldwin Avenue, Bottesford, on June 21. Grimes was also found at the location.

However, barrister Christopher Tehrani QC delayed Grimes’ sentencing at Hull Crown Court after indicating the ex-soldier wanted to change his plea to not guilty.

Following a recent investigation by Grimes’ legal team, Mr Tehrani told the hearing that the accused accepted there were “no arguable grounds” to retract his previous guilty plea.

Subsequently, the case was adjourned until June 27, 2022, when Grimes will be sentenced.

Grimes appeared in court remotely from Hull Prison.

Prosecutor Mark McKone QC stated Sophie’s family will be attending the sentencing hearing.
