Scunthorpe manager ‘reminds’ players of their responsibilities after clash with fans

Scunthorpe United’s manager has ‘reminded’ his players of their responsibilities following Joe Nuttall’s clash with fans last weekend.

The Iron striker failed to convert a chance during the second half of Scunthorpe’s 1-1 draw with Hartlepool before he swore at nearby fans.

Gaffer Keith Hill removed the player shortly after the incident to reduce the tension on and off the pitch.

After the fixture, Joe Nuttall had issued Scunthorpe fans with a heartfelt apology.

Speaking to BBC Humberside Sport today, Hill said the abuse that footballers receive is simply unacceptable either via social media or at the game itself.

However, he stressed that he does not condone any abuse from players towards supporters.

“Under no circumstances do I condone any negative gestures towards the supporters. The supporters are the lifeblood of every football club”, he said.

He added that he has since spoken with Nuttall and the younger players within the squad about their conduct on and off the pitch.

“I do expect self-discipline, self-responsibility and self-respect, and out of that, you will get respect given from all quarters of the footballing world”

Fans and players have both endured a difficult season this year as Scunthorpe’s 72-year stay in the English Football League came to an end, following a disappointing domestic campaign.

However, during today’s interview, Keith Hill spoke with optimism, suggesting next season the fans would “revive” Scunthorpe as they battle for promotion from the National League.
