Row over local drive-thru plans
A proposal has been submitted for a new Starbucks cafe with drive-thru facilities on site, to be situated in the car park of Morrisons supermarket, Grimsby.
There were similar plans reported back in 2018 that resulted in objections being made against the plan, by the Civic Society who complained about the industrialization of the area.
However the Mayor Cllr David Hasthorpe, has warned that the development could exacerbate traffic congestion in the area.
The residents also reiterated claims of noise pollution in the area, suggesting it would not be a positive development for the area.
Cllr Loyd Emmerson, who strongly opposes the plans wrote on social media:
In the new plans, the developers have suggested the site near the supermarket’s warehouse- a ‘single storey coffee shop with a drive-thru facility.
The building will see the car park losing 28 parking spaces, with a 171 sq ft building, reportedly bringing 15 jobs to the area.
In the application, Trilogy Ltd says “The site layout has been driven by a desire to rejuvenate underused areas of the WM Morrisons existing car park.
“By incorporating a complimentary use which can not only support linked trips but is also a strong enough brand that it can operate independently of the superstore.
“The proposed location within the car park is such that it will minimize disruption to the existing car park operation and minimal parking spaces will be lost.
“The scheme seeks to revitalize the existing WM Morrisons car park by offering more choice to customers and generating new employment opportunities through the provision of a new drive-thru coffee shop. WM Morrisons hope that the advantages of this proposal, as well as the overall benefits to the local community, will be supported.”
