Man in 95mph pursuit with police sentenced
Connor Swift, 20, of Brigsley Road, Grimsby admitted to dangerous driving in the early hours of November 13, last year.
Judge Michael Fanning said it was “luck” that no one was killed in the incident.
Mr Swift was a provisional licence-holder and subsequently banned from driving for a year and ordered him to take an extended retest.
The driver admitted driving without a full licence and a no insurance offence.
Prosecuting at Grimsby Crown Court, Ben Hammersley told how Humberside Police traffic officers were on patrol on Laceby Road in Grimsby when they became suspicious of the driver.
They followed the Audi and as they activated their emergency lights, the Audi driver initially pulled over to the side of Clee Road
He then sped off towards Isaac’s Hill, with the officers in pursuit where the Audi reach speeds of 95mph in the 30mph limit.
Swift turned into Park Street and up Carr Lane and back onto Clee Road where the police officers stopped their pursuit.
Details of the ownership of the vehicle were checked and officers attended an address where they found Swift and another hiding in a garden shed.
The driver admitted he did not have permission to drive the car, or possessing a license, with his stepmother confirming he had no permission.
Mr Hammersley said: “The pursuit lasted three minutes and he failed to give way at junctions and over roundabouts. There were no other road users at the time.”
For Swift, Craig Lowe said his client was 19 at the time of the offence and he was of previous good character.
Judge Fanning said the police recorded the speed at 95mph but noted it had been 100mph at one point.
“It was fortunate there were no others in the streets. If you had hit anybody they would have been dead. It was three minutes of idiocy.
“You went over junctions and roundabouts without stopping. It was complete luck no one was killed.”
Mr Swift received a suspended the four-month prison sentence, for one year and ordered Swift to do 15 rehabilitation days.
