Disabled staff member made redundant after 35 years of hard work
A disabled man who also has learning disabilities has been made redundant after 35 years worth of hard work and dedicated service.
Nigel has worked for the council for 35 years, becoming a familiar face to locals for litter picking around Cleethorpes and Laceby before working at the Doughty Road depot cleaning the yard.
Fran, Nigel’s sister, said this role had given Nigel the confidence and independence he needed to make him feel ‘worthwhile’.
According to Fran, the council has said that a restructure has led to Nigel’s role no longer being needed.
She added that recommendations were made to make Nigel’s role possible and manageable, but that these changes had not been put in place.
Fran said she was deeply upset by the council’s decision but went on to praise her brother’s hard work and determination.
Nigel’s sister Fran shared his story, stating: “This is my brother Nigel, he has worked for the council for 35 years.
“Yesterday, Nigel was made redundant after appealing to keep his job. Nigel has learning disabilities and is disabled and was a familiar face around Cleethorpes and Laceby as he used to litter pick around the village and beach, then Nigel went onto working in the Doughty Road depot cleaning and sweeping the yard.
“This role had empowered Nigel and gave him independence and made him feel worthwhile. The council has said due to restructuring Nigel’s job was not needed.
“Nigel could have stayed at home claiming benefits with his disabilities but he didn’t he has continued to work and it gave him a sense of purpose. Nigel has seizures and has done all his life recently a few simple adjustments had to be made to keep him safe due to Nigel‘s condition like signing in and signing out was recommended to the council so Nigel could return after the council asked him to stay off after having a seizure, basic stuff.
“These practices were never put into place, instead Nigel has been made redundant. The impact this has had a detrimental effect on his well-being.
“I find the council’s decision disgraceful not once has the Council thought about the impact this would have on him. There has been no thank you for your services handshake not even a box of chocolates just basic redundancy after 35 years £5,300.
“Well this is from me I’m very proud of you Nigel for what you have achieved and well done.”
