Young squirrel saved after being turned away by mainstream charity

A local wildlife rescue has carried out yet another wonderful save after a squirrel much in need of care was turned away by a mainstream charity.

Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue picked up a very young squirrel from a member of the public after an attempt to reunite it with its mother had been unsuccessful.

The member of the public had also been turned away by a mainstream charity, leaving them to care for the squirrel.

Despite feeding it sugar water to try and get its strength back up, the baby squirrel needed urgent care.

The rescue volunteers helped the squirrel get its strength and help back, and have reported that the little animal is now doing much better!

In the UK it is illegal to release grey squirrels back into the wild, with the only options being euthanasia or licenced rehoming.

The rescue team will find a licenced home for the young squirrel once its health is back to normal.

Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue Said: “Grey squirrels are an invasive species to the UK, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t receive care.

“This very young squirrel was found yesterday by a member of the public, reuniting it with its parent was unsuccessful and they had been turned away by a mainstream charity.

“In that time they did all they could to help the squirrel by using sugary water but sadly this isn’t enough to give it a chance at survival.

“Thankfully, they came across us and we arranged it to come to one of our trained volunteers. It was very hungry on arrival and is doing a lot better at the moment.

“At this age with such a long period without the correct formula, it’s sometimes hard to get them to come around however, this one is showing good signs already!

“Sadly for captured grey squirrels, it’s against the law to release them back to the wild, the options are euthanasia or licensed rehoming… we of course NEVER put a healthy animal to sleep so we are thankfully able to work with lifelong sanctuaries once they’re healthy enough to leave our care!”
