A180 temporary speed limit to finally end today

The 40 mph temporary speed limit on the A180 has finally come to an end, nearly two weeks after roadworks ended.

Highways England announced on April 8 that the works would end overnight that same day, after storms and underground cables caused delays.

Many motorists were deeply frustrated by the speed limit, especially since the roadworks took place overnight and not during the day.

Although some defended the move, stating that it only added five minutes to journeys, many felt that the limit was uncessary.

Back when the limit was first announed, National Highways Project Manager Steve Bishop said: “When setting a temporary speed limit we take a measured, safety-led decision that considers a number of factors. In this case, there is no central reserve barrier so reducing the speed limit to 40mph means we can reduce the severity of any collision or personal injury should there be an incident.”

The speed limit on the eastbound carriageway will end today and on the westbound carriageway it will end on 23 April.

Highways England said thes limits were still required as an extra safety measure for drivers until all the work in the area has been completed, including the removal of the safety camera system.

This work was carried out after the Easter break.

The overall works saw two miles of barrier installed as well as drainage repairs and upgrades to road signs between the Stallingborough Interchange and Pyewipe Roundabout, costing £2 million.
