Further A180 roadworks likely to take place in the future
On Friday (8 April) the roadworks on the A180 were finally completed after months of delays and speculation.
The works, which began in November 2021, left motorists deeply frustrated as a 40 mph speed limit was put in place for the duration of the works.
Despite the work having ended, the speed limit remains for the time being.
We contacted Highways England about the roadworks, which saw two miles of barriers installed, repaired drainage, and upgraded road signage between the Stallingborough Interchange and Pyewipe roundabout.
Despite the scheme costing £2 million, only a section of the A180 had new barriers installed.
On the section that saw roadworks, some old barriers remain despite the extensive programmme.
This prompted confusion as to why old barriers would be left up when the scheme aimed to see the barriers replaced.
When asked why only the section between the Stallingborough Interchange and Pyewipe roundabout was chosen, Highways England said: “As part of our regular inspection programme, it was identified that the existing vehicle restraint system at this location was at the end of its serviceable life and the best solution was to replace the barriers. Other sections of the road will have barriers renewed as and when the need is identified.”
In terms of the old barriers being left next to the new, they said: “The sections of barrier that have not been renewed are generally newer lengths that were replaced more recently and therefore still in better condition. It would not be cost-effective to renew these lengths while they are in good condition.”
When the older barriers, which was not replaced, comes to the end of their serviceable life they will need replacing and work would be likely to start again.
As the works are carried out on an as and when basis, sections of the road could be closed off or worked on in the future.
