The Mariners EPIC comeback shocks league leaders
The Mariners shocked the National League leaders in an epic comeback this afternoon.
The Mariners faced a momentous challenge this afternoon as top of the league Stockport County travelled to Blundell Park.
The Hatters were unbeaten in 9 league games going into the match, although Town managed to bag a crucial three points against Chesterfield two weeks ago.
Speaking to BBC Radio Humberside, Grimsby gaffer, Paul Hurst described today’s fixture as “daunting”, but they were ready for the challenge.
Earlier in the season, both sides were held to a 0-0 draw, a result that the Mariners will be using as motivation to get something from this afternoon’s game.
Hurst brought in Scannell and Efete to reinvigorate his squad, the latter having just recovered from an injury.
Stockport got the match underway inside a packed Blundell Park.
The Mariners began rather strong, forcing an early free kick in a deadly area. Danny Amos was unable to punish the visitors with his effort.
The Hatters screamed for a penalty after Waterfall’s tackle on Scott Quigley brought the attacker down, but the referee waved the appeals away.
Despite their promising start to the game, the Mariners found themselves 1-0 down before the 15th minute mark.
Hippolyte and Madden combined on the left-hand side of pitch, before a delicate pass found Quigley who slotted the ball passed Max Crocombe.
The visitors continued to knock on Towns door with a plethora of ruthless attacking moves, fortunately nothing materialised.
10 minutes before the first half concluded, Stockport’s Sarcevic was shown a red card after a horrendous tackle on Michee Efete.
The first 45 finished 1-0 to the visitors. Despite trailing, the Mariners would be looking to punish Stockport with their extra man.
Emulating their entrance to the opening 45, Grimsby started the second half in style.
Efete found himself space inside the Stockport box, picked his spot and placed the ball into the opposite corner, only to be saved by the feet of Hinchliffe.
The Mariners continued to retain possession whilst pushing deeper into the visitor’s half.
Scannell moved the ball down the right-hand side and whipped in a beautiful cross towards Clifton. Although the move did not result in a goal, Grimsby’s new-found confidence looked promising.
Town found the equaliser after a deadly attacking move, with over 20 minutes left to find a potential winner.
John McAtee placed the ball through the keepers legs to make the back of the net bulge. Blundell Park erupted with pure joy and excitement.
“You’re not singing anymore” bellowed around the stadium after the Mariners bagged a second.
McAtee’s initial shot had been deflected wide and out for a corner. Waterfalls delivery found Holohan who beat the keeper with his headed effort.
Grimsby had to see out five minutes of stoppage time before they could claim a massive three points, which they did with ease.
The game concluded 2-1 to Grimsby Town, a huge victory in front of a packed Blundell Park.
