Multi-million-pound transformation concept talks continue

Scunthorpe town centre could receive a multi-million-pound transformation, it has been announced.

A leading UK construction group has been appointed to push forward a multi-million-pound “enterprise and innovation hub”, North Lincolnshire Council said.

Planning permission for the “groundbreaking” concept had been given the green light earlier this year, a proposal that would provide a plethora of new jobs.

Galliford Try will finish the final design details for the £12m redevelopment, on behalf of North Lincolnshire Council as part of the Government’s Future High Street Fund.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council and Towns Fund Member, said he is thrilled that Galliford Try has been appointed by the board to kickstart the next phase of development.

“The enterprise and innovation hub will be a game-changing addition to the heart of Scunthorpe, welcoming new people to the town centre for new reasons”, he added.

“Not only will businesses benefit from the incredible environments and green space, the growth of staff and young professionals will directly support Scunthorpe’s bars and hard-working retailers. It is a real win-win for the high street”

The proposed designs will include outstanding collaborative spaces for local businesses, as well as a licensed café bar and a 46-bed unit for the NHS.

It is understood that the innovation hub is the first of many projects set to be delivered to Scunthorpe, ready to create an exciting future for residents.

The council said the schemes are funded with £30m of Government money from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, through the Towns Fund and Future High Streets Fund.

The plans will provide gigabit broadband to hundreds of businesses whilst also delivering green energy schemes for schools and community buildings.

Additionally, an advanced manufacturing park will be created, new cultural experiences, a blue light facility and hundreds of new homes will also be delivered.

The hope for the town’s revamp is to bring better-paid jobs, driving prosperity, and ensuring a brighter future for Scunthorpe residents.

Holly Mumby-Croft, MP for Scunthorpe and vice chair of the Towns Fund Board, said:

“This further shows Government backing plans for growth in Scunthorpe and evidence of levelling up – this will create jobs, new homes for the NHS in the heart of the town centre and make a huge contribution to the rejuvenation of the high street”

Managing Director of Galliford Try Building North East, Cliff Wheatley, said:

“We are delighted to be involved in the delivery of the Scunthorpe Enterprise and Innovation Hub, which will provide a high-quality modern working environment for businesses across the region”

“The new hub helps revitalise the high street and will attract more people into the heart of town, stimulating the local economy and ensuring its future sustainability”, he added.

Cllr Waltham added:

“With the construction of the hub moving ever closer, there is a fantastic opportunity for forward-thinking businesses to relocate or expand into the town centre, becoming part of Scunthorpe’s exciting next chapter”
