Lia Nici votes against keeping home abortion scheme
MPs recently voted to keep the scheme introduced during the 2020 lockdown that allows women to take abortion pills at home rather than in a clinic.
Although the government planned to scrap the scheme this year, a vote in the House of Commons forced ministers to rethink this.
The vote was passed with 215 ayes, the majority of the votes coming from Labour and some from the Conservatives.
However, 188 MPs voted against the plan, including Grimsby MP Lia Nici.
The Commons was told since the change in the rules two years ago, 150,000 women have had abortions at home before they are 10 weeks pregnant.
Face-to-face services will remain an option.
The landmark Abortion Act 1967 will now be amended, bringing England into line with Wales, which already decided to make the scheme permanent.
Although the scheme will now stay in place, it is unsurprising that Tory MPs including Ms Nici voted against the plan.
As it was a Tory government that wished to end at-home abortions, it would of course only be natural for Tory MPs to back that decision.
However, some tory MPs and Labour MPs banded together to share their own experiences of abortion and how making it accessible could help thousands of vulnerable women.
