Jailed Scunthorpe drug dealer felt ‘scared’ and ‘overwhelmed’

A former chicken factory worker and father-of-two continued to deal heroin on the streets of Scunthorpe despite being caught by police and put on bail.

Elias Teddy was found to be in possession of around £3,300 cash, the profits from the destructive nature drug dealing has in local communities.

Mr Teddy, 32, of Reginald Road, Scunthorpe admitted conspiracy to supply heroin from July 1 to October 28 last year.

However, he initially denied the offence before pleading guilty just before the trial began.

Giles Grant, prosecuting, told Hull Crown Court that Mr Teddy had been arrested by police on August 7 whilst in his VW Golf. Arresting officers found numerous mobile phones in Teddy’s possession with one displaying messages directing drug runner on his behalf.

Additionally, messages had been identified that suggested drugs were being dealt from a separate persons address again, on his command.

During his arrest, officers retrieved a bag of around £580 cash that he was carrying.

Whilst being interviewed by police, Teddy denied any involvement in the distribution of an illegal substance. However, while the perpetrator was detained, a large stash of cash had been uncovered during a routine search. The total amount stood at around £3,300.

Another mobile phone was discovered inside the lining of his trousers, that too housed messages relating to the supply of drugs.

According to Mr Grant, Teddy had an “operational” or “management “role within the drugs business.

Elias Teddy was born in Ethiopia, coming to England around seven years ago to find work, Craig Lowe, mitigating, said.

Teddy has no previous convictions which was described as “very rare” for someone involved in the drugs world, Lowe added.

The 32-year-old has two children aged two and three. The court heard how being away from them has impacted Teddy.

“It is very much his intention to provide for them in due course and to be a role model”, said Mr Lowe.

“He has a determination not to reoffend. He is scared indeed about the sentence he will receive”, he added.

Judge John Thackray QC said:

Class A drugs cause misery and devastation within the community. Over a four-month period, you were heavily involved in supplying Class A drugs, including a time when you were on bail. That’s very much an aggravating factor. You played a significant role because you involved others.”

Elias Teddy was jailed for four-and-a-half years.
